SEO experts know that the most important way to get to the top of the search engines, particularly Google, is to build high-quality, relevant links. While good links can get you noticed by Google, bad links can work against you and can even result in Google banning your site. So it’s important that you use legitimate, quality strategies for building your links. Here are two temptations to avoid in the process of link building.

•Link Farms

Links farms are websites containing tons of links. Their sole purpose is to get spiders to index pages, and they are of absolutely no use at all.

If you think you’ve come across a link farm, note whether it contains more links than a typical website. See if there’s an explanation of the site’s purpose. Link farm URLs are often very long and contain lots of hyphens. Of course, there are plenty of legitimate sites with URLs that have lots of hyphens, but make sure you research them thoroughly before adding a link. Also note if the extension is .info or .biz. Many link farms use these extensions.

Next, determine whether the potential link farm looks like other links farms, meaning that it looks like a generic template without any alterations or personalization. Does the website look like someone takes care of it and updates it frequently? Is there a way to contact the site owner via e-mail? Beware of any site that doesn’t provide contact information.

Last of all, are there more links crammed on the page than really makes sense?

A good rule of thumb is to avoid at all costs any site that gives the appearance of being a link farm. You’re better off missing a good link that linking to a link farm and risking adverse consequences for your search engine rankings.

•Irrelevant Links

Every site that you link to should have something to do with your product or service. Online business owners who link to pages that are not relevant to their own market niche do so to either increase page rank or to get a website indexed. Even if another site is a legitimate one, don’t link to it unless has something to do with your product or service. The same is true for asking another person to link to you. A link to your site from one that is completely unrelated to your field does no good either for you or for the person who is linking to you.

Thoroughly research any site to which you link or links to you. Make sure it’s relevant. Furthermore, if you choose to submit your site to directories, or if you’re submitting articles you’ve written to article directories, send your information to the most pertinent sections and topic headings.

Remember that you can be identified as a link spammer even if you had no intention of collecting links in a shady way. Listen to your gut as you’re trying to decide who to link to and who to ask to link to you. If you have any doubts, stay away. It’s hard work, but the only way you’re going to get high-quality, relevant links is to do lots of work.

Many online business owners choose to do the hard work of obtaining inbound links on their own. If you feel that you have the time and energy to do this without neglecting other crucial aspects of your business then you’ll find that it’s interesting and rewarding work. If you don’t have the time to put into collecting inbound links for your site, or if you’re just not interested in doing it yourself, you may want to consider contacting an internet marketing company or SEO expert. These professionals have years of experience getting good inbound links for their customers. They have more strategies than you can ever imagine, and they can get the job done for you at a reasonable price.

Search Engine Optimization and Setting Yourself Apart: 6 Basics

internet marketing Articles from Moe Tamani, the SEO Services Consultant.

If you’ve spent any time at all becoming familiar and search engine optimization and internet marketing strategies then you’ve probably heard how important it is to differentiate yourself from your competition. Never is that more important than during an economic recession when you and all of your competitors are vying for the business of those who are very picky about how and where they will spend their money. So how do you set yourself apart? Here are 6 basics.

1.Ask for opinions. Everyone loves to feel like what they have to say is important and valuable. Use testimonials and product reviews on your website. Not only will potential customers pay more attention to what current customers say, but those whom you ask to provide testimonials will feel as though you value their opinions. One great way to approach this is to use audio clips, which can be as simple as taping a conversation on the telephone.

2.Video. Videos that contain your call to action can be very compelling to potential customers for several reasons. First, videos contain a personal touch that the written word can’t always convey. Second, a well-done video makes you look technologically savvy and professional, which always makes a good impression on potential customers. Third, they allow you to demonstrate your products and service in ways that photographs can’t. After you post the videos to your website, upload them to YouTube as well.

3.Use Pictures. You can almost never do too much personalizing of your website. There is the possibility of going overboard, but you should also make sure that your website allows your potential customers to get to know you and your staff. Pictures included on your About Us page are a great way to do that, along with short biographies. Visitors will be more willing to trust you if you’re willing to show them some of yourself as well.

4.Social Media Marketing. Social Media is a great way to set yourself apart and make good on all of your search engine optimization efforts. Set up profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to start and engage in the communities present there. The point of using social media is to make connections, not to go for the hard sell, so set aside an hour or two each week simply to visit these sites and see what the conversation is all about. Add relevant information and helpful advice where appropriate and chances are that you’ll start attracting your social media connections to your website. This goes for blogs as well. Commenting on blogs is a great way to call positive attention to yourself if you do it respectfully and with a sense of collegiality instead of salesmanship.

5.Be Clear About Your Value-Added. Many times when I make a purchase I ask the salesperson, “Why should I go with you rather than your competitor?” Whether or not your potential customers ask that question directly or not, that’s what they’re thinking when they visit your website. Make sure your website answers that implicit question. Make it clear why your visitor should choose you and not the other guy. It doesn’t have to be explicit, but that question should be in the forefront of your mind as you design and write copy for your website.

6.Expanded Descriptions. Let people see multiple dimensions of your products. Provide pictures that offer several views and close-ups to help convince your customers that your product is the one they want.

If you’re still not sure how to stand out from the crowd, consult with an internet marketing professional or search engine optimization expert. They can help you create a overarching marketing strategy that will clearly differentiate you from your competition and increase your profits.

SEO: The 3 Keys to Marketing Your Website

internet marketing Articles from Moe Tamani, the SEO Services Consultant.

Even if you haven’t yet turned yourself into an SEO expert you can still start marketing your business in a way that will help you see results quickly. The key to a good marketing campaign is ensuring that it is targeted, consistent, and intelligent. A targeted marketing campaign is aimed at attracting people who are already interested in your product or service, who have already done their research, and who are just about ready to make a purchase. These individuals are crucial to your marketing plan because they are the ones who are actively deciding where to purchase the product or service that they’re seeking. You want them to find you, of course, and become your loyal customer. A consistent campaign helps you build your authority with your target audience so that they begin to trust you and therefore your product or service. Finally, a smart marketing campaign means that you use several different strategies, including SEO, to attract potential customers to your website. Here are three great marketing strategies for you to focus on:

1.	Social Networking. This is a key to creating a targeted marketing campaign. Social networking allows you to participate in online community made up of people who shared your interests. In this case your interests would obviously revolve around the product or service that you’re offering. Choose several networks at first. Once you get the hang of it and feel that you can consistently participate, you can join more later. Complete a profile and start interacting with other people in the online community. One of the keys to using social networking is to make sure that you’re a participant, not a salesperson or advertiser. In order for social networking to work for you, you have to be a helpful part of the community. People want to see you as a relevant participant before they will ever decide to do business with you.

2.Article Marketing and Blogging. Article marketing is both a great authority-building tool and SEO tool. It’s a great SEO tool because each time you submit an article to an article directory, you have the opportunity to link back to your own site in the resource box, and search engines place a premium on inbound links from authoritative sources. It’s a great authority-building tool because articles give you the opportunity to show your target audience that you know what you’re talking about and are a trustworthy businessperson. And every time you submit an article to a directory, you should also publish it to your business blog. Search engines reward sites that consistently publish fresh material, so make both article marketing a blogging an integral part of your marketing campaign.

3.Keywords. Each page of your website should be optimized for one or two keywords. This means that your keywords should be placed strategically in your title, your headers, and your tags. The content on your page should also contain several instances of your keywords as well. Search engines value content that is relevant to your product or service, and will give your site higher rankings if it deems your content relevant and helpful. And the higher your search engine rankings, the more traffic you can expect at your site, and you’ll start to notice higher profits!

These are just three ways to construct and targeted, intelligent, and consistent internet marketing campaign. If you’d like more information about how to go about marketing your business online, consult an SEO expert or internet marketing professional. These people will help you create a successful internet marketing campaign that uses the best tools and strategies available, and then they’ll help you implement it so that all of your hard work will pay off in the end. So don’t wait! Start your campaign today and enjoy your success!

SEO experts and internet marketers alike will tell you that the two most important factors in successful search engine optimization are good content and relevant links. But a savvy online business owner should never underestimate the importance of on-site SEO factors as well. Here are ten to which you should pay close attention when you are optimizing your webpage.

1.Description Tags: The description tags on your website will be used by search engines to describe your content on the search engine results page. Thus your description should be compelling to the user so that he or she will click on your site as opposed to the competition.

2.Title Tags: This is probably the most obvious on-site optimization tool, but is often ignored by online business owners. Each title tag on your website should be short and unique, and should contain the keywords for which you are optimizing on that particular page.

3.Heading Tags: Each page should have a heading that uses one or two keywords to describe the page’s content. The most important heading should, of course, have an H1 tag. H2, H3, H4, and so on should be reserved for your subheadings.

4.Anchor Text: If you’re serious about SEO, then you need to pay attention not only to anchor text in external links, but also in internal links. Your anchor text for internal links should use keywords and keyphrases; otherwise, how do you expect a search engine to reward you for relevance if you don’t even reward yourself through optimized anchor text?

5.Filenames: Each page in your website should be named using the keyword or keyphrases for which you are optimizing that particular page

6.HTML Sitemap: Your website should definitely include an HTML sitemap to help search engines when they are indexing your website. If your website consists of a large number of webpages then you should arrange your sitemap using categories. If you just create one long list of pages then you’re not helping your visitors navigate your website, and usability is really one of your ultimate goals.

7.XML Sitemap: You should have an .xml file that contains a list of the URLs used in your website. This file should then be submitted to the search engines. This file will help search engines when they are trying to index your website.

8.Navigation: Instead of linking from every page on your website to every other page on your website, choose the most important pages from which to link from your homepage. The categorize each of your other pages to go with each of the most important subpages that you have just chosen. This helps the search engines understand which pages you consider to have the greatest value.

9.No Follow: Let’s say that you want to link from your website to some helpful information you’ve found on another website, but that you can’t vouch for the entirety of the website to which you are linking. Simply add a no-follow attribute. This tells Google to ignore your link, which is helpful if it’s possible that the overall quality of the page to which you’re linking is not terribly high.

10.Content: As mentioned before, on of the most important elements of on-site SEO is content. But unlike link creation, you have 100% control over the content on your page. The key to content is to write relevant, unique, helpful copy that your visitors will find engaging and useful. Equally important is updating your page with fresh content on a regular basis. Search engines pay attention to pages that update content frequently, so this is one of the most important things you can do to get spiders to notice your page.

The caveat is this: don’t just add content for the sake of adding content. Make sure the information you’re adding is relevant and useful. You waste everyone’s time by updating your page with random content that isn’t much help to anyone.

People who regularly publish content on the web, including business owners interested in SEO, use RSS (Really Simple Syndication) to inform readers that they have published updated information. This means that your customers, or potential customers, can be notified every time you update your business blog or website. The advantages of using RSS for SEO purposes are countless. Every time you publish cutting edge or highly-valuable information, your readers will be updated and can link back to your site, thereby increasing your inbound links. When you publish industry-related information, you establish yourself as an expert in your field and your credibility with your readership increases too. The question becomes, then, how to inform other webmasters that your content is available. Here are 7 simple steps:

1.Tell the search engines. You can do this simply by replacing your URL with this code: http://www.yourdomain.com/rss.xml.

2.Use the graphic. RSS has a conspicuous graphic consisting of an orange square with white lines and a white dot. If you add this to your website, your readers will see it and subscribe to your feed. Many web-savvy users already look ...

Many web-savvy users already look for this icon, so you may find that you gain a lot of subscribers simply by adding the icon to your page. You can also customize your own graphic, but this may do more harm than good since the orange square icon is the current standards.

3. Submit. Once your code is updated and you’ve add the RSS icon to your site, you should start submitting your site to search engines and directories. Submit to as many as you can, as this contributes to your link popularity, which is a key of SEO.

4.Email. Email is a great way to promote your feed. All you need to do is to include your feed URL in the signature line of your outgoing email. You might even consider including a link both to a desktop reader and a website reader if you feel like there are people who would want your content for their sites.

5.Personal Search Pages. If you have a MyYahoo homepage or a MyMSN homepage, you can include your feed on those pages as well. This is great way to attract spiders. If you don’t have those homepages, get them immediately and include your feed. When you’re setting up your feed on Yahoo, go to your page and then to Add Content. In the Find Content box, add the feed URL.

6.Ping. Pingomatic.com lets you notify the main blog directories that you’ve added new content to your site. Then you can be assured that the search engines will send spiders back to your site right away!

7.Update Regularly. The best way to use RSS for SEO purposes is to update your content regularly. By adding new content on a regular basis, you increase the amount of traffic that comes to your site and you increase your credibility among your readers. Many readers are used to subscribing to blogs only to have the owners stop posting after a week or two. So it’s always refreshing to come across a helpful, informative blog that the owner cares about updating on a regular basis.

Never hesitate to contact an SEO expert or internet marketing professional to help you learn more about RSS and what it can do for your business. When you update your site regularly with useful information and then inform as many people as possible, you drive traffic to your site. This translates into more customers and, of course, more revenues!

SEO professionals and internet marketers are all too aware of the importance of social networking for effective internet marketing, but are you? If you’re not yet convinced that you should be using social networking, here are 5 great benefits to keep in mind.

1. Mindshare. Social networking sites allow you to tailor your message to your target audience depending in which platforms you use and which followers you have. Whereas the old model used to rely on newspaper ads and billboards, the social networking model focuses on profiles and updates. Social networking sites are a great way for a small business owner to announce company news and offers, broadcast timely information of interest to a business owner’s target audience, and engage followers in a relevant and helpful. The number of social networking users is actually quite staggering, so if you aren’t using social networking as an SEO tool, then you’re really missing out.

2. Build Relationships. Gone are the days when customers were willing to simply trust a business owner whom they may never see or to whom they may never talk. Some customers would be interested in reading your blog while others might want to follow you on Twitter. Some will review your products on Amazon. A customer’s experience or perception will always be enhanced by the opportunity to interact with you on some level. Google Alerts is a great way to find out what people are saying about you in forums with which you might not even be familiar.

3. Link Building. Link building is one of the most important SEO tasks you can undertake, and social networking is a great way to get it done! Link to your website from your profile and, if possible, include keywords as anchor text within your profile. Then point those links to optimized pages within your website.

4. Drive Traffic. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the more exposure you have on the internet, the more people will be interested in visiting your website. The key to driving traffic is not only providing a link, however; it also requires providing helpful information and high-quality content that will build your credibility with your target audience. This information should also be so compelling that your target audience just can’t help but click on the link to your site. One of the most important things you can do is to send your social networking traffic directly to a landing page that you’ve created just for them. It should be targeted to the audience with whom you interact in social networking sites and should contain a particular call to action that pertains to them.

5. Rank High. The more high-quality content you place on social networking sites, the more you become visible to your target audience, and the more likely the search engines are to notice you and reward you with high rankings. Remember that search engines don’t just index websites, but also photos, images, videos, blogs, social networking profiles, and podcasts. Good content located in many relevant places helps you get noticed by the search engines and thus ranked higher.

The biggest social networking mistake you can make is not using it as an effective SEO tool. If you’re not using it already, then you can guarantee that you’re losing business to your competitors who are. There are so many social networking site users out there now that you simply can’t afford to ignore these sites. They not only allow you to build valuable inbound links to your site, but they allow you to build relationships with your potential customers. They provide you with widespread exposure and the ability to establish yourself as an expert within your market niche. If you need further guidance in using social networking as an SEO tool, consult with an internet marketing professional who can help you integrate social networking into your overall internet marketing plan.

SEO and Website Design: 5 Considerations

internet marketing Articles from Moe Tamani, the SEO Services Consultant.

If you’re serious about SEO, then your website design should reflect your concern for getting high search engine rankings and thus driving plenty of targeted traffic to your website. Here are 5 considerations to keep in mind as you’re building an SEO-friendly website.

1.Target Audience. Who exactly is your product or service for? How old are they? What are their other interests? What phrases and idioms motivate them to spend money? What problems are they trying to solve? If you can’t answer these questions, then you don’t know enough about your target audience to design an SEO-friendly website that will attract them. If you do know the answers to these questions, then your website design should reflect those answers.

2.Your Business as a Standout. Even if you’re selling the same products and services as hundreds of your competitors, you should stand out from them in some way. If you don’t, why would someone choose to do business with you rather than your competitors? One key to remember is that people are just as impacted by their experiences with buying products and services as they are by the products and services themselves. You have to be able to clearly articulate what it is that makes you stand out from everyone else. Otherwise, you’re not yet ready to design your website.

3.Driving Traffic to Your Site. You can have the most amazing website in the world, but that makes no difference at all if your target audience can’t find it. That’s why you should consider SEO from the moment you begin designing your website until the moment you put on the finishing touches and call it done. One of the keys to SEO-friendly website design is to put lots of thought and research into the keywords and keyphrases your target audience is using to find products and services like yours. If you’re not sure how to go about optimizing your site, or how to research good keywords, consider talking to an internet marketing professional or SEO expert. They can help you make sure you’re optimizing for the right keywords and thus driving your target audience directly to your website.

4.Website Effectiveness. Believe it or not, some business owners aren’t really sure why they’ve created a website in the first place. That’s why you need to know exactly what you want your visitors to do when they get to your site. Do you want them to buy a product or service? Do you want them to leave an email address? Do you want them to subscribe to your newsletter? Whatever action it is that you want your visitors to take, make sure they can do it easily, without having to put too much thought into it. You should also limit the number of actions your visitors can take when they come to your site. This way they aren’t confused or distracted.

5.Website Navigation. When visitors arrive to your site, there should be a particular flow for them to follow without having to think about it. What is that flow? Where should visitors go when they come to your site? When you know exactly how you want your visitors to navigate your website, you can determine the order and placement of navigation links, and the location of your call to action. Also consider how you will get your visitors back into the flow if they find themselves arriving at your website in the middle of the path you have setup.

If you’re a business owner who hasn’t yet expanded to selling your products or services online, then you’re overlooking a huge market full of people who would much rather make a purchase online than have to search stores and vendors to find what they’re looking for. And once you make SEO part of your business plan, you’ll see just how easy it is to attract visitors to your website and turn them into loyal customers. Here are several steps to creating your online business:

1.Create Your Website. This is obviously key if you’re planning to sell products on the internet. Hire a professional web designer to create a website for you that looks professional and that increases your credibility with your target audience. Bypass the temptation to create your own website unless that’s your specialty. You need a website that convinces audiences that you are committed to the highest level of customer service, and that is easily communicated with a great looking website. Additionally, make sure that your website is easy to navigate and that it makes it easy for your customers to buy your products.

2.Get People to Come to Your Website . This is where you need to think about how you’re going to approach your SEO efforts. Consider hiring an SEO professional or internet marketing expert to optimize your website for you. Then ask him or her what other tools you can use to drive traffic to your website. These will typically include using social networking sites, writing articles and submitting them to article directories, and building up the number of inbound links to your website. All of these things increase the value that the search engines assign to your website and subsequently increase your search engine rankings. And when you have high rankings, more people will be able to find your corner of the web.

3.Offer Good Customer Service. SEO can get people to your website, but only you can turn them into loyal customers. Make sure that any guarantees you have for your products or services are spelled out on your website. Customers are far more likely to do business with you if they feel that they have some recourse it they are dissatisfied for any reason. And make sure that you answer phone calls and emails quickly. The internet can be a very mysterious, anonymous place, so take away some of the mystery by letting your customers know that you are a real person who cares about their satisfaction.

The hardest part about selling your products and services online, of course, is driving traffic to your website. Search engine optimization and search engine marketing are enormous fields that generate an unbelievable amount of literature, so you shouldn’t have any problem learning to them yourself. But SEO is also a steep learning curve to climb, and while your filling in your gaps in knowledge, your competitors are using SEO and SEM to drive traffic to their own websites. The cost of doing SEO yourself, then, is the number of customers you are losing because your competitors’ names are showing up at the top of the search engine results page. Your best bet, then, is to contact an SEO professional before you even create your website. They will help you create an SEO-friendly website and help you with both on- and off-site optimization. They will help you create an overall internet marketing plan that utilizes the best search engine marketing tools for your business. So don’t lose any more potential customers than you already have. Talk to other business owners and get recommendations for SEO professionals or internet marketing experts. Tap into their expertise and let them help you create a website that attracts your target audience and gets your products sold.

Business owners who are serious about SEO sometimes overlook the obvious in the attempt to drive traffic to their site and start doing business. One of the obvious factors is choosing a good web hosting company. A good web hosting company is essential to SEO. After all, if your website is down for a significant period of time, then you can’t exactly do business, can you? Here are 5 things to consider when choosing your web hosting company.

1.How Do They Advertise? One good way to find a trustworthy web hosting company is to look and how—and where—they advertise. Go to a local bookstore and check out the magazines for web developers. See which web hosting companies advertise there, and how big their advertisements are. If they have enough money to advertise in a periodical, then they’re most likely legit.

And most periodicals will pull advertisements if their readership provides negative feedback about the advertisers. Any web hosting company that is making enough money from customers to advertise in magazines is probably worth investigating.

2.What’s Their Reputation? Check out online reviews from other business owners who are serious about SEO. If these businesses have good things to say about the web hosting company, then the company is probably trustworthy. This is easy to do simply by searching the name of the company with the word “reviews.”

3.How Much Does it Cost? You should be able to find a trustworthy, affordable web hosting company without any trouble, but any company that advertises their services for less than about $7/month should raise red flags for you. Some companies that charge very little for their services practice what is known is shared hosting. This means that they use a single server for more accounts than the server could actually manage if each account user was using all of the bandwidth allotted to him. If this is the case, you can probably bet that your site will have some downtime, and that can be detrimental to your SEO efforts.

4.Do They Guarantee Their Services? The one thing worse than significant amounts of downtime is the risk of losing all of your data. This means that you should only trust web hosting companies that offer a money-back guarantee. When you’re researching a web hosting company, see what their refund policy is. This should give you a good idea of trustworthiness.

5.What Does Your Gut Say? Do your instincts tell you that this is a reputable company? Believe it or not, your gut is almost always a good indicator when making important decisions. So get all the facts that you can, and then listen to what your gut is telling you. Do they return emails in a timely manner? Do they talk to you in terms that a layperson can understand? These are all things to consider when shopping for your web hosting company.

There no overestimating the importance of a trustworthy web hosting company for SEO. Not only might you experience a great deal of down time if you go with a shady company, but you also risk losing enormous amounts of data; enough, in fact, that you can put your entire business at risk. So look for companies that are considered reputable by others in your business. Check out their advertising. Research their refund policies, and then follow your gut.

An SEO expert or internet marketing professional is also a great resource to consult when shopping for a web hosting company. They’ll be familiar with the reputations of lots of companies and will be able to give you accounts of their first-hand experiences with those companies. Don’t take unnecessary chances with your business. Find a web hosting company that will help you develop your business to its full potential!
